5 Fun Holiday Dinner Ideas with Kids

charcuterie board-fun holiday dinner

It’s a different year this year, and because of COVID19, the CDC has advised us to stay home, and celebrate with our closest family members, the ones that live in our homes with us.

I know many people are upset about this, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make it a festive occasion and we can’t have a moment of joy with the people we love the most in our lives.

Here are some dinner ideas with kids that will make your holiday dinner celebration fun and unforgettable. What’s more— these ideas will not have you tied up in the kitchen all day long!

5 Fun Holiday Dinner Ideas with Kids

Turn your dinner table into a charcuterie board.

Charcuterie boards are all the rage right now! And Claudia Candelas has a beautiful one here! Again, this is another idea that is super fun and it’s not a sit down dinner which makes it fun for kids as well.

Make it a crepe party!

Crepes are similar to pancakes and can be served savory or sweet. The crepes can be made ahead of time, or you can prepare the batter for the following day– the batter needs to sit for a bit (at least two hours). A crepe party is also a great idea for brunch!  Truthfully, crepes are a good option for breakfast lunch or dinner!

My favorite go-to crepe recipe is the basic crepe one by Martha Stewart.

Sweet crepes:

There are tons of sweet crepes combinations. A favorite, of course, is Nutella.

Some other toppings include:

  • honey
  • butter and sugar
  • jam
  • whipped cream and strawberries
  • Nutella and banana

Savory crepes:

  • My favorite combination is bacon, cheese and spinach.
  • Here are some other ideas:
  • Eggs and ham
  • Sunny side up eggs
  • sundried tomatoes
  • mushrooms
  • spinach
  • cheese

Have a raclette party.

If you know me, you know that I LOVE CHEESE which is why, this idea is one of my favorites. A raclette party is very easy to pull together, and perfect if you’re in colder weather. Raclette is the name of the cheese that is melted using a raclette machine (This is the raclette grill I have) You prepare the cheese, potatoes, and types of veggies ahead of time.  This dinner is very fun for older kids especially. You take the raclette and you  put it in the grill and you melt the cheese. It’s quite delicious! Here are ideas on how to throw a raclette dinner party.

Have a French apéro party.

A apéro, short for “apéritif” is a party where you have put out a beautiful spread of finger foods in single servings (which is great for COVID times).

I’ve written a blog post about how to throw an apéro dinner party like the French here.

Have a fondue party!

A fondue party is a lot of fun! You can have a cheese fondue, or a meat fondue. For a cheese fondue, you melt cheese (Martha Stewart has some cool recipes here) and you cut little pieces of bread. For a meat fondue, you heat up oil and cut pieces of raw meat and cook it in the oil. **This is best for older children, because you have to be careful since the pot is hot.

Here is the fondue pot that I have:

Fondues are also great for DESSERT: a chocolate fondue will be a hit for adults and kids alike! (Some people also like caramel fondue).
