Take on a challenge: Eliminate HFCS – High Fructose Corn Syrup!

During my pregnancy I was very concerned about the types of foods I was eating, and I tried to not consume high fructose corn syrup. It was hard to eliminate HFCS because it’s EVERYWHERE! Now that I’m a mom, I continue avoiding HFCS at all costs.

Here are some quick facts that made me decide to avoid products with HFCS:

– HFCS does not occur naturally, despite recent ads that say it comes from “corn sugar.”

– The body metabolizes HFCS differently, so a person might not feel satiated by foods that contain HFCS, so they tend to continue eating. => increasing caloric intake, leading to overweight/obese.

– HFCS is cheaper than sugar- so food companies use it in many processed foods (including soda.)

– During the same time that the use of HFCS has increased, the obesity rate in the USA has also increased. While it may not be the SOLE cause of obesity, I believe it does play a role.

The Challenge

I know that there are many people who know about HFCS and its effects on the body, but I also know some people don’t.

I want to bring awareness to the widespread use of HFCS in packaged foods, and how easy/hard it is for individuals to go HFCS-free. Here are the awesome bloggers who are participating:

Participating bloggers:

Adrianna Domingos Lupher aka Military Money Chica

Amanda Mervine Edwards aka Mother of Ambition

Andres Jumanji aka El Sambo

Diana Limongi aka ladydeeLG

George Torres from Sofrito for your Soul

I invite you to join us for THE #NOHFCS challenge: consume no products that have HFCs for two days, and blog about your experience.

If you’re a blogger and want to join, all you have to do is commit to going HFCS-free for two days, and blog about it any day between September 1st and September 4th, 2013. Please use hashtags: #NOHFCS and #SMBloggers

If you’re not a blogger and want to join in, no problem! Take on the challenge, keep notes and share them in the comments section OR share your experience with me via FB. If your diet is already HFCS free, tell me why you made that decision!

Your comments might be posted on one of the participating blogs!
