My Highlights of 2017

Two years ago I wrote a post talking about the highlights of 2015. In 2016, I didn’t get around to doing it, but since I was feeling a bit BLEH right before the beginning of the year, I decided to do it again this year.

When I told my husband that I felt like I hadn’t accomplished much in 2017, he said “you made life!” That certainly put things I perspective!

So I thought about it, and of course, she is my biggest accomplishment. Her birth, feeding her, sharing my experiences online about being a mom, advocating for paid leave, becoming a mom of two– those are all accomplishments. Then I started thinking, I’m being dramatic… surely I had some awesome moments in 2017, right? So, I asked myself what were the highlights of my year?

Here are some of my favorite moments, some of the highlights of 2017:

I met feminist icon Gloria Steinem!

What a special moment this was!

Next on my list? Dolores Huerta, Shonda Rhimes, Oprah, just to name a few.

So last week I was bummed because I decided to be prudent and not go to the #WomensMarch– and when I saw Gloria Steinem on FB live i was bummed I didnt get to be there and feel her energy… and tonight THIS happened! Tonight we are celebrating #paidleave in NY State and I’m proud to be part of this evening’s festivities… while I won’t benefit from it because my employer doesn’t offer this benefit- I’m happy for all the moms and dads that will have access to it in 2018… and I will keep raising my voice for parental rights and moms in the United States! #paidleave for everyone! Thank you @kirstengillibrand for your work and dedication to make #familyact a reality #nygamechanger #momsrock #risers #mamaspoderosas

We welcomed my daughter into the world.

After an eight hour labor (YAY!) Sofia was born at 2:11 pm on March 1st.

I was invited to join the Pampers Baby Board.

Due to wonderful serendipitous events, the universe put my in touch with Pampers and I’m delighted to be part of the Pampers Baby Board.

I met the President of France Emmanuel Macron.

Emmanuel Macron was in NYC for the UN General Assembly meeting and the inauguration of the French Dual Language Program Fund. And of course, to take a selfie with moi. 😉

Pausing for a minute to share this. I was invited to the inauguration of the #French #DualLanguage Fund, which will provide scholarships, grants and more to French DLPs in NYC and the USA. It was an awesome event, you can learn more about it on my blog. I do hope that one day we will bring a French DLP to District 30 in Queens- it is bc of my work and commitment to bilingual education that I got to meet this smart guy. President Emmanuel Macron beat the nationalist Marine Le Pen in France’s last elections and gave the ? a little bit of hope that the fascists & nationalists will not win. Sharing this today because I used to do something on my blog called #FrenchFridays where I highlighted some aspect of French culture. So today, three cheers for @emmanuelmacron and for him saying OK when I asked him “can we take a selfie?” (Really, three cheers for him for supporting bilingual education!) Merci Monsieur Le Président. #mkbkids #bilingualkids #multiculturalfamilies #vivelafrance

I celebrated my 10 year wedding anniversary.

If you’re married, you know, marriage is hard work! So hooray to us for celebrating 10 years of ups, downs, roller coaster rides, kids, mortgages, bills and boogies.

I took a family trip to Ecuador.

In November we took a family trip to Ecuador and it was amazing. (More to come on that trip!) I’m so happy my family there got to meet my daughter and that my son got to practice his Spanish…. speaking of which…

My son started to read and write in Spanish.

You may be wondering, “Why is this your highlight?” Well, I work really hard to make Spanish fun and engaging, and bilingualism is something I’m passionate about, and it is really important to me, so the fact that my son can read and write in Spanish proves that everything I’m doing is working, and we are making our dream of multilingual kids true!

I was invited to be a part of the Aspen Institute’s Parent Advisory Panel.

I continue expanding my work with MomsRising!

I’m so thrilled to be continuing and expanding my work with MomsRising, because I heart what they do!  This time it’s all about healthy food!

Though I had to take things slow in 2017 due to my baby’s arrival, I think I still did pretty well. My word for 2017 was growth and  I think I did grow, especially as a parent and activist.

As part of the New Year, I like jotting things I hope to accomplish and work on a vision board/wish list. I also like to pick out a word. This year I haven’t been able to narrow it down to one word but I’m working on it.

I can’t wait to see what 2018 has in store for me and  I encourage you to put your dreams out there into the universe and start planing how you are going to make your dreams a reality!

Thank you for being here!

 Let’s kick ass in 2018!
