5 Ways to Celebrate National Flex Day (Yes, It’s a Thing!)

Workplace flexibility should really be a must for the 21st century.  I understand that there are certain jobs that simply cannot be done from home, but there are many that can be. So, why not allow employees to work from home?

There are benefits to allowing employees to have flex time, for both employees and employers.

For employees, there’s the possibility to be closer to home and not having to take time off for things like, say, if the plumber needs to stop by, if you  have a sick child, if there’s a snowstorm and you are seven months pregnant (this is real, and it was me, and no, I wasn’t able to work from home… I had to take an unpaid day off).

For employers, it makes happier employees. Happier employees are more productive, Happier employees will be more loyal, there will be less staff turnover. Happier employees boost morale, if morale is high, everyone is happier. Seems like a win-win right?

As a working mom, of course I support anything that helps us fulfill our professional and personal obligations.  I’ve been a member of 1 Million for Work Flexibility for a couple of  years now. 1M4WF is the first national initiative bringing people together to create a collective voice in support of work flexibility.

October 17th is National Flex Day

Working Mother Magazine created National Flex Day because they realized that a mother’s work day sometimes cannot be 9-5, it simply doesn’t match the realities of being a parent (and neither do school schedules, but that’s another conversation for another time!).

Meredith Bodgas, Editor-in-Chief of Working Mother magazine and workingmother.com says:

Working Mother recognizes that moms’ family schedules don’t always meld with a 9-to-5, in-office, 5-day-a-week job. That’s why we’re proud to support National Flex Day and send the message that moms can do great work whenever, wherever companies allow them.

Emma Plumb, the Director of 1 Million for Work Flexibility adds:

National Flex Day is an opportunity for employers and employees to engage in open and honest conversations about the value of work flexibility, to help move this issue forward on a national scale.
