The 2019 State of Babies Report: How Does Your State Rank?

Zero to Three released its annual report, the 2019 State of Babies, recently. It goes over how babies and toddlers are faring in each of the USA’s 50 states.

The report confirms that where a child is born affects so much of their health outcomes and their ability to grow up and thrive.

The report is divided into three categories: good health, strong families, positive learning experiences.

EYE OPENING STATISTICS

The report is eye opening. In its analysis of how babies are doing across the nation, Zero to Three found the following (incredibly heartbreaking) facts:

45% of babies living in families with poor or low-income

State of Babies -Affordable childcare

The USA ranks 31st for child poverty among 38 nations.

61% of Babies in the United States have mothers who work 

51% of babies are children of color

It found that:

On average, 6 in 1,000 babies born in the U.S. will not survive to see their first birthday. In some states, 9 in 1,000 babies born will not survive.

Some highlights of the report regarding NY:

 
affordable childcare

72% of babies in NY received recommended vaccines (compared to 70.7% nationwide)

59.5% of Infants breastfed at 6 months (compared to 83.2% nationwide)

3.7% Uninsured low-income infants/toddlers (compared to 5.8% nationwide)

WHAT STATES ARE DOING A GOOD JOB?

The report found that the following states that are ‘Working Effectively’ towards creating good health among babies include:

ZERO TO THREE says “There are 12 million infants and toddlers in the United States. Each of these young children is born with unlimited potential. They are our next generation of parents, workers and leaders.  The future of our nation depends on how we treat babies and their families today, and we can’t afford to squander the potential of a single child.”
