Introducing Parenting and Politics The Podcast
I’m super excited to share my latest project: Parenting and Politics the Podcast! As I’ve been getting more involved in different issues I realized that many parents don’t have the information they need to make empowered choices, to be advocates for the issues they care about. So, I decided to create the podcast to fill what I saw was a void in the space.
A lot of times I feel that parents are put off by the word “politics” and everything that it brings with it, especially in today’s day and age. People think it’s partisan, dirty, swampy… we want to think we don’t want to be political but the truth is that everything in parenting is affected by the politics of our day and that’s what I want to try to demystify.
If we think about the issues that we deal with in parenting: the decisions to become parents, or expand a family, access to reproductive health, affordable healthcare, the lack of access to paid leave, living in childcare deserts, affordable childcare, good schools, access to clean parks, clean air, clean water, good transportation, racist policies in education like suspensions (I could go on and on) … all of these issues are decided by lawmakers, politicians who are many times out of touch with what it is like to be raising a family in 2019.
So, I decided to create this space and to invite guests to come and speak on different parenting topics through a political lens. I decided to start the podcast at the beginning, to discuss reprorights and reproductive justice with Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas, the Executive Director of the National Latina Institute of Reproductive Health. Because the decision to become a parent, or to expand one’s family, and to have access to family planning is an incredibly important part of parenting. You can listen to that episode here.
