Whale Watching in Puerto Lopez, Ecuador

Whale watching in Ecuador was one of the things on my bucket list. I found it to be something so extraordinary, to see these enormous creatures up close. Even though they live in the sea, humpback whales are mammals, like humans, which means that they have mammary glands, which means mama whales breastfeed their babies. In case you’re wondering how much milk a baby whale drinks in one day, the answer is 60 liters (roughly 4 liters to a gallon.)

Every year humpback whales travel from the Arctic to the warm waters in the Pacific Ocean for the summer. They do so to mate and breed.

Whale watching season in Ecuador is from June-September. Here’s some info on our trip, which was really wonderful.

We used Millon Service Tour Company. The company is family run, the father and son run it, and the daughter runs a scuba diving training school if you’re interested.  The tour guides were helpful and knew their stuff. If you’re planning a trip to whale watch in Ecuador, I highly recommend them.

PUERTO LOPEZ MANABI

Our tour lasted approximately three hours. After we spent some time watching the whales, we headed off the coast of a small island called Salango, where we docked and people could jump and swim or snorkel.

Once we came back to land, we asked our tour guide, Tio, to suggest a good spot to eat. He suggested we head over to Spondylus, a restaurant in front of the port.

SPONDYLUS PUERTO LOPEZ

I recommend camarones al ajillo (shrimp in garlic sauce) & pescado frito (fried fish that comes with rice and plantains.)
