My (almost) French Life

Make it a Crepe Night!

I recently wrote a post about cooking (or my lack thereof) and working moms. I received a lot of feedback, encouragement and ideas, so I thought I would share my progress (or lack thereof, ha!) in my attempt to make more homecooked meals.

A couple of weeks ago, I decided Sunday afternoons would be the time I would (try to) dedicate to prepping for Monday night dinner (and maybe something for Tuesday?)

I was looking for things i could  ”premake” that would be easy to heat up it put together on Monday when I got home from work.

So I had an idea. I would make crepe batter in Sunday night, let it sit overnight, and make the crepes Monday evening.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with crepes, crepes are from France. The easiest way to describe them is to say they are similar to pancakes, but thinner and lighter (well… Depending what you put in them!)

Making crepes is not hard at all, I use Martha Stewart’s basic crepe recipe.
Depending on how old your children are, you can involve them in different ways! They can help me make the batter, or prep the table before dinner.

Crepes can be fun to assemble and there are tons of ways to eat them! You can eat them sweet or savory, and get creative with the fillings!

I am happy to report crepe night was a success, and I think it’s going to be a weekly occurrence in our home.

Here are some ideas:

Savory crepes

  • eggs
  • Shredded chicken or turkey breast
  • Ham
  • bacon
  • Cheese
  • Spinach
  • Beans
  • Avocado
  • Mushrooms
  • Caramelized onions
  • Tomatoes

(I’ve never seen this done in France, but you could probably use ground beef too!)

Sweet crepes

  • Jam
  • Nutella
  • Butter and sugar
  • Sugar
  • Melted chocolate
  • Strawberries
  • Bananas
  • Lemon and sugar
  • Whipped cream

Making crepes is not only fun and delicious, but for me, it is also a way to share some French culture with my son, who is half-French. Even if you are not French, it would be a fun way to learn about another culture!

I am happy to report crepe night was a success, and I think it’s going to be a weekly occurrence in our home.

If you try this out, let me know how it goes!! Tweet your crepe pics to @dianalimongi
