Hispanic Heritage Month is here! Now, if you’ve been following this blog you may remember that  I have posted about how I didn’t really celebrate HHM until recently. I have come to appreciate HHM for a time to show others the beauty of all the different cultures in Latin America. So, I have created this list of ways to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Kids in NYC.

1. Go El Museo del Barrio.

2. Attend a dance event the Fall for Dance Festival.

3. Eat all the food! Head over to the traditional Hispanic neighborhoods and get your fill of delicious foods:Tacos- Mexican Food
 
I recommend: Washington Heights for delicious Dominican food, but really– there’s delicious food EVERYWHERE!
And Queens has it ALL!

Mexican tacos – Athens Grill, Tacuba, Maizal, De Mole – Astoria
Colombian bandeja paisa – I love Pollo’s Mario and Basurero (various locations)
Don Coquí – Puerto Rican – Astoria
 
Venezuelan arepas – La Vecina in Astoria is delish.
Peruvian roasted chicken and ceviche- try Riko’s in Sunnyside
 
 

 

4. Learn about Taíno Culture and Identity at the National Museum of the American Indian

Event: Monday, October 15, 2018, 2 – 4 PM

During this time there will be a museum specialist discussing Taíno history, culture, and worldviews. Through cultural materials and live demonstrations, Jorge facilitates discussion of the persistence and depth of Taíno lifeways and living traditions.

Note: this exhibit will be on display until October 2019, and this museum is ALWAYS FREE!

 

5. Learn how to make HAMACAS! (October 6th)

The Museum of the American Indian is hosting a free hamaca (hammock) making course on October 6th.

6. Visit the DiMenna Children’s History Museum (part of the NY Historical Society)

Inside the NY Historical Society, downstairs, is the DiMenna Children’s History Museum. In it you will find a library with a great variety of books. There is also an exhibit of prominent New Yorkers- one of those is a Cuban athlete named Esteban Bellan, the first Latin American Player to play professional baseball in the USA.

 

 

7. Mano de Obra/ Hands on (art) work: Music and Art Exhibition

Attend this music and art exhibition at the Ecuadorian American Cultural Center for a free dance and art exhibit. 

This event is FREE and it is happening on September 23rd from 4-8 pm. There will be live music.
