8 Great Organizations to Support on Giving Tuesday.

Happy Giving Tuesday! Many of us are so blessed with things we take for granted… like our jobs, our homes, paid sick days, our immigration status, our educational background, our health. Sometimes we don’t even think about the fact that many peopel don’t have these things… but there are other things we take for granted too, things as simple as a shower or a haircut. If you’re thinking of making a donation today and don’t know where to start… I’ve compiled a list of eight great GREAT organizations to support on Giving Tuesday, divided into two categories, national and local impact.

Organizations with national impact:

MomsRising.org:MomsRising If you haven’t heard of MomsRising, you’re missing out! It is an online grassroots organization made up of hardworking ladies and volunteers working to achieve economic security for all moms, women, and families in the United States. I love MomsRising because they work to improve the lives of women, children and families in the United States. They work hard to advocate for paid family leave, earned sick days, affordable childcare, and work discrimination. They also support comprehensive immigration reform that will not divide families, and work to improve the food our children eat,  You know this is near and dear to me as I’m completing a fellowship that has changed my life, trajectory and perspective not just on the things that are not working in this country but on the power that we have as individuals to change things for the better. I hope you can support the work with a donation.

St. Jude’s Research Hospital:stjude_logo

I’ve been a St. Jude’s supporter since 2009. St. Jude’s is at the cutting edge of life-saving cancer treatment for children and no one pays and no one gets turned away. What’s not to love about that? To give to St. Jude, please visit their site, there are many ways you can support St. Jude

National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health NLIRH logo: I believe all women who have the rights to choose what to do with their bodies, and have access to affordable healthcare. The NLIRH “builds Latina power to guarantee the fundamental human right to reproductive health, dignity and justice. We elevate Latina leaders, mobilize our families and communities, transform the cultural narrative and catalyze policy change.” You can make a donation here.

shotatlifelogoShot@Life:sal-logo Here in the developed world, we don’t even think about the fact that many children don’t have access to vaccines, and die as a result. Vaccines save lives around the world and soon, polio will be eradicated thanks to vaccines.  It has been great to see the work that Shot@Life is doing around the world, bringing vaccines to the world’s neediest children. I’m honored to be a Shot@Life champion. For more information and to make a donation visit the Shot at Life website… bonus! The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will be matching all gifts today in honor of Giving Tuesday, so if you donate $5 = $10, $10 = $20, etc!

Organizations to support with a local impact:

POTSPOTS (Part of the Solution), Bronx, NY:

POTS’ mission “is to be a loving community in the Bornx that nourishes the basic needs and hungers of all who come to its door.” POTS is dedicated to helping individuals in the Bronx by providing services like Community Dining Room, Food Pantry, Mail Services, Barbershop, Clothing Room, Shower Facilities, Legal Clinic, Medical & Dental Clinic, Holiday Meals and Gifts. HourChildren_ HCWIDELOGOwithRHour Children, LIC, NY: Hour Children has been around for over 25 years. It is an organization that helps formerly incarcerated women get back on their feet. Their vision is “The to end the cycle of intergenerational incarceration.”  I love this organization because I think every mom deserves a little help getting ahead so she can provide for her family. It is also dear to my heart because it is in my hometown, but more importantly they have a great mission, and are helping moms and children every day: “Ourmission is to help incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women and their children successfully rejoin the community, reunify with their families, and build healthy, independent and secure lives. To accomplish this, Hour Children provides compassionate and comprehensive services and encourages all to live and interact with dignity and respect.”

The Founder of Hour Children is one kick-ass nun, Sister Tesa. You can read more about Sister Tesa here. You can make a donation to Hour Children here.
